How to Create a Freemium Community (Free + Paid Tiers)

A freemium membership offers basic access for free while reserving premium features or content for paying members.

1. Create or Edit your Offer and select "Freemium Membership"

How to: Go to Admin Settings > Payments > Offers

2. Under "Pricing", configure Membership Tiers

  • Choosing a Freemium Membership will automatically enable a Free Tier for limited access.

Configure Free Tier and Add Paid Tiers

  • The Free Tier is included by default. Edit it to set the access level (e.g., general chat only) and customize details like name, title, and badge visibility.

Add Paid Tiers

  • A paid tier is automatically added, click the 3 dots to edit the information you want here. 

  • Click + Add Membership Tier to create additional paid options. Customize each with different access, pricing, and perks.

  • Choose whether you want to add a free trial for paid tiers, and adjust the trial length as needed. Payment information collection is turned on by default to ensure an easy transition from trial to paid.

  • Choose whether you want members to name their own price. Adjust the minimum, and suggested price settings as needed. 

3. Finalize the Offer

Upsells

  • Turning on in-community upsells for Freemium Memberships, encourages free members to upgrade as they engage in the community.

On Cancellation

  • Decide whether or not access to the community is blocked.

Advanced Settings

  • Choose to set quantity limits, expiration date, limited visibility and/or a limited time period on your offer. 

4. Cancel Flows

  • If a member on a paid tier stops paying, they will automatically be moved to the Free Tier, retaining basic access.
