When a member cancels their subscription, here's what happens in your Heartbeat community:
1. They go through your defined cancel flow
When a member clicks “Cancel,” Heartbeat will walk them through the cancel flow you’ve created for that offer.
This may include:
-
Collecting cancellation feedback
-
Suggesting a discount to stay
-
Offering an alternate membership tier
📘 Need help setting this up? See: Creating Custom Cancellation Flows
2. They retain access through the end of their billing term
Heartbeat will not immediately remove access when someone cancels.
For example:
-
If a member pays on the 1st and cancels on the 15th, they’ll still have access until the end of the month.
3. They lose access to everything tied to that offer
Once the billing period ends, the member will automatically lose access to:
-
Discussion channels
-
Events
-
Courses
-
Documents
-
Matchups
-
Custom sidebar links
-
Any other content or features tied to the offer
No manual steps are required from you — Heartbeat handles it all.
When setting up an Offer in Heartbeat, you choose what happens if a member cancels their subscription. You have two options, and it's important to understand the difference:
🏡 Remove Offer Access (Default)
Members lose access only to content and groups tied to that specific Offer.
-
They stay in your community.
-
They can still access free or public areas.
-
Best for communities with multiple Offers or free content.
🔍 Think of this like revoking a membership badge, not kicking them out entirely.
🔒 Block Community Access
Members are fully paywalled across the entire community.
-
They’ll see a paywall until they resubscribe.
-
They can’t access anything in your community.
-
Best if you want to limit access strictly to paying members.
⚠️ Use this if your whole community is behind a paywall.
Use Remove Offer Access if you have both free and paid content. Use Block Community Access if you want the whole community gated behind a paywall.
4. Protected event links enforce access rules
Even if canceled members have events on their calendar, they won’t be able to join if they no longer have access.
That’s because Heartbeat uses protected event links, which check their membership status before redirecting to the event itself.
