Choosing Which Discussion Channels to Use for Your Community

  • Updated

Heartbeat offers two types of discussion channels: Threads and Chat. Each supports a different style of communication, and you can use both across your community.

There’s no strict rule — just a few helpful patterns based on community size and type of interaction.

Threads Channels: Best for Organized, Topic-Based Conversations

Threads look like Facebook-style posts with stacked replies underneath. Great for keeping things tidy and focused.

Use Threads when:

  • You want structured, searchable conversations

  • You're sharing announcements, prompts, or Q&A

  • You expect follow-up replies per post

Thread channels are ideal for larger groups (30+ members in a channel).

Threads are ideal for discussions you want to revisit later — and they scale well as your community grows.

Chat Channels: Best for Fast, Ongoing Conversations

Chat channels feel like a group text — one continuous message feed, perfect for real-time back-and-forth.

Use Chat when:

  • You want quick, casual conversation

  • You're running a small group or cohort

  • You’re aiming to build momentum and connection

Chat channels are ideal for smaller groups (5-15 members in a channel).

Use Chat to spark fast engagement — especially with new or smaller groups.

Final Tips

  • Threads = organized, topic-first

  • Chat = fast, informal

  • You can mix and match — use what fits your vibe

Start simple. As your community grows, evolve your setup to match the way your members engage.
