How to Create a Great Onboarding Video for Your Community

  • Updated

An onboarding video is one of the best ways to welcome new members, set expectations, and guide them toward value — fast. Here’s how to make yours great (and how to embed it in Heartbeat).

What to Include in Your Onboarding Video

A great onboarding video has three simple parts:

1. Warm Welcome

Introduce yourself with a short headshot-style video. Smile, be conversational, and let people feel the vibe of your community right away.

People join communities for connection — your personality matters more than polish.

2. Guide Members to Value

Help them solve the problem they came for. Highlight key features or spaces in your community that’ll get them results quickly.

Examples:

  • Discussion Channels: Point out where to ask questions or get feedback

  • Events Tab: Show how to RSVP and attend

  • Documents: Share your top tutorials or recorded sessions

3. Show Them Around (Literally)

Use screen-sharing to give a quick walkthrough of your community. Click through important tabs, show off your most popular channels, and guide them to take their first action.

Don’t just tell them what’s available — show them how to use it.

How to Add Your Video to Onboarding

  1. Go to Settings (top-right corner of your community)

  2. In the left sidebar, click Onboarding

  3. Scroll halfway down to the Video section

  4. Toggle it on and paste your video link

Supported platforms: YouTube, Vimeo, and Loom

Once saved, this video will appear during the onboarding flow for new members — helping you drive engagement from day one.
