How to Add a Required Code of Conduct for New Members

  • Updated

Setting a clear tone from day one is critical — and Heartbeat makes it easy to require every new member to agree to your Code of Conduct before entering your community.

Step-by-Step: Add a Code of Conduct to Onboarding

  1. Go to the Documents tab in your community sidebar.

  2. Either:

    • Use the default Code of Conduct template in the Initial Resources section

    • Or create your own document with your community’s rules and expectations

  3. Once your document is ready, click the Settings icon in the top-right corner.

  4. In the left sidebar, go to Onboarding.

  5. Scroll down and toggle on the Require Code of Conduct option.

  6. Select the document you'd like to use.

  7. Click Save Changes.

Use the document’s description and formatting tools to make expectations clear — including what’s encouraged, what’s off-limits, and any consequences.

What New Members See

  • During onboarding, members will be shown the full document.

  • They’ll be required to click “Agree” before entering your community.

  • The document remains accessible later via your community's Documents section.
