How can we help?

Selling a Resource

A Resource can be sold two ways, and you can do both at once:

  • To the public: anyone on the internet buys it without creating an account.
  • Inside your community: members buy it as a one-off, separately from their membership.

Selling a Resource does not require the buyer to become a member, and it does not require you to run the sale anywhere else.

Sell to the public

  1. Create the Resource and build it out.
  2. Click Publish and choose visibility Public only.
  3. Choose public access Paid access and set the one-time price.
  4. Set the Public URL slug, the link you will share.
  5. Review and publish.

The public page shows a preview of what they are buying and a list of the documents inside, each with a lock icon and an Unlock button. Locked content is not readable before purchase.

Pricing

Set a fixed one-time price, or turn on pay what you want, which lets the buyer choose the amount. You can set a minimum, including a minimum of zero.

Pay what you want suits things where you would rather have the reader than the revenue, like a guide you want widely shared, and it usually collects more than a free download and fewer objections than a fixed price.

If your community has no connected Stripe account, the page tells you so rather than taking a payment it cannot process.

The checkout

At checkout, abandoned sessions where members did not complete the purchase will still capture the user's email address. They appear in People → Leads straight away, with the Resource as their source, whether or not the payment went through.

Someone who got as far as the payment step and stopped is one of the best contacts you will get. They show as a Warm lead. A completed purchase counts as higher intent and shows as Hot, so the temperature column tells you who started buying and who finished.

After paying, the buyer gets access on the spot. They do not create a password or join your community.

If a buyer loses their link

They can recover it themselves by pressing "Already have access?" under the "Continue" button. From here, users can re-enter their email address.

After doing this, users will receive an email with the subject "Access [resource name]" and a View resource button that opens it.

Access recovery only covers purchases. Someone who unlocked a free Resource with their email simply enters it again on the page.

Sell inside your community

  1. Click Publish and choose visibility Community only.
  2. Choose community access Limited access.
  3. Under Included access, add any roles or groups that should get it without paying.
  4. Switch on One-time purchase and set the price everyone else pays.
  5. Review and publish.

Members see the Resource in the community but cannot open it until they buy it, unless they are on the included access list.

If you leave One-time purchase switched off, there is no purchase path at all: the Resource is simply restricted to the people you included. For a member who has to pay, it is a separate purchase from their membership.

Sell to the public, give it to members

Choose visibility Everywhere, set the community side to free, and set the public side to a price.

Members open it as part of what they already pay for. Everyone else pays. This is the configuration that makes membership visibly worth something: the same thing outsiders are buying is included in what members already have.

What buyers keep

What someone bought, they keep.

  • Raising the price later does not affect them.
  • Adding documents to the Resource gives them the new ones too.
  • If their membership lapses, a separately-purchased Resource stays theirs. They reach it through access recovery on the Resource's public page.

Does a paid Resource become one of my Offers?

A paid Resource does not become an Offer. It carries its own price, and a purchase is recorded against the Resource itself rather than against an offer.

Offers still matter on the page, in the other direction: a visitor looking at a locked Resource can be shown your membership offers as an upsell. So a Resource can sell membership, but it is not sold as one.

Practically, that means a Resource price and a membership price are separate things you manage in separate places, and buying one never grants the other.

Frequently asked questions

Does the buyer become a member with a purchase?
No. They become a lead: a known contact who is not a member. Joining is a separate decision and a separate purchase.

Can I bundle membership into the same checkout?
Not at this time, but we're open to adding this, so please send us your feedback - the more upvotes a request gets, the more likely the team is to prioritize it.

Can I charge members and the public different amounts?
Yes. Publish Everywhere and the community price and the public price are set independently.

Can I set tiered pricing, or a subscription, on a Resource?
No. One price per audience, charged once. Recurring pricing is what memberships are for.

Can I let buyers choose the amount?
Yes. Paid access supports pay what you want, with an optional minimum.

Does the buyer get a receipt?
A buyer who is not a member gets an email confirming they have access, which is how they find their way back later. A member who buys gets no email, because the Resource is already in their community. Whether Stripe emails its own receipt depends on your Stripe settings.

Can I sell one document rather than the whole Resource?
Access is set on the Resource, so put the thing you are selling in its own Resource. A sample has to be its own free Resource. You cannot leave one document free inside a paid one.
