A Resource holds documents, but once you get enough of them into a single resource, a Folder will be the best to group and organize content.
The structure
Resource → Folder → Document. One level of folders, and that is the whole hierarchy. There are no sub-folders and no documents nested inside other documents.
You don't need a folder to get started.
Creating a folder
Anyone who can edit the Resource can add folders, and Pulse can create them for you too. To add one yourself:
- Click New folder on the Resource's page, or New folder in the three-dot menu at the top of any document in it.
- Give it a Name. Required.
- Add a Description if you want one. Optional.
- Choose a Folder type: Text, Video or File. Required.
- Click Create.
Inside a document, the folder dropdown at the top left has +New folder too:
Thumbnails
Resources and folders both show as cards, and each card can carry an image. There is no thumbnail field when you create a folder. To add it, open the three-dot menu, choose Edit, and use Upload thumbnail.
Without one the card falls back to a plain icon.
Ordering
Documents can be reordered by dragging, if you can edit the Resource. Hover over one in the sidebar and a six-dot handle appears on the right. Drag it up or down to reorder it, or onto a different folder in the same Resource to move it there. Documents that sync from Notion can't be dragged, except the top page of the sync:
Folders and Resources are reordered from their cards. Hover over the cover and a six-dot icon appears in the card's top right corner. Drag that icon, not the card, onto the spot you want, and a line shows where it will land.
- Folders: on the Resource's page, if you can edit the Resource. If the Resource's Folder view is set to List in Edit details, drag the six-dot icon on the folder's row instead.
- Resources: on the Resources page, if you can create Resources. The dropdown above the cards has to be set to All, because dragging is off while Archived is selected.
Reordering isn't available in the mobile app, and Pulse can't reorder or move documents or folders, so do it yourself on a computer.
Order matters more than it used to. On a public Resource the first document is what a stranger reads first, and it is doing the work of a landing page, so put the thing that proves the Resource is worth their time at the top rather than a table of contents.
Moving documents
Open the document, click the three-dot menu at the top right of a Document, and select Move. This is how you send a document to a different Resource or Folder.
Moving a document to a different Resource changes who can see it, because access belongs to the Resource.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to my nested documents? Deeper nesting was flattened during the migration from Docs to Resources. Content nested more than one level deep was moved up, and standalone pages that only existed to hold child pages were removed.
Can I have sub-folders? No.
Can I move a folder to a different Resource? Yes, if you can create Resources. Open the three-dot menu on the folder's card, choose Move and pick the Resource. Moving it changes who can see its documents, because access belongs to the Resource.
Can I reorder my folders? Yes. On the Resource's page, hover over the folder's card and drag the six-dot icon in its top right corner.
Why won't my Resource cards move when I drag them? Drag the six-dot icon in the card's top right corner, not the card itself. It appears when you hover over the cover, and only while the dropdown above the cards is set to All.
Can I drag a document into a different folder? Yes, within the same Resource. To send it to a different Resource, use Move in its three-dot menu.
Do folders have their own access settings? No. Access is set on the Resource.
