You can let brand-new members get into your community with just their email the first time they log in, and verify it later. Verification isn't skipped, only delayed, so new members can start exploring right away and confirm their email within 7 days.
How to turn it on
Head to Settings > Community and toggle on Delay email verification for new members.
From then on, a new member who signs up through your Sign Up Link types their email and lands straight in your community. We also send them an email so they can confirm the sign-in was them.
That first session lasts up to 7 days. After that, or any time they log in again, they'll need a login code as usual, which verifies their email.
Who still verifies right away
Even with the setting on, these people still get a login code on their first login:
- Anyone who already has a Heartbeat account, including members of other Heartbeat communities
- Anyone joining with an admin or moderator role, or any role with admin permissions
- Anyone joining through a private invite link
- Anyone who doesn't pass our automated spam check at sign up
- Members using your branded app
Spotting unverified members
A member who hasn't verified yet shows an Unverified badge next to their email until they do. If you or a moderator send them a direct message, you'll see a note that they haven't verified their email yet.
Is this right for your community?
Turning this on makes it easier to join, which is great if getting new members inside quickly matters most to you. The login code also acts as a small filter, since it confirms someone owns the email before they get in. If you'd rather keep that check in place, leave the setting off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this on by default?
No. Your community keeps requiring a login code until you turn the setting on.
Do my existing members log in differently now?
No. The setting only applies to a new member's very first login. Existing members keep logging in with a code.
How does an unverified member become verified?
Either by confirming from the sign-in email we send them, or by logging in with a login code, which they'll need within 7 days at most. Once they do, the Unverified badge goes away.
Can I turn it off later?
Yes. Toggle it off in Settings > Community and every new member will need a login code again.
