Heartbeat doesn't set a minimum age for members, so students under 18 can have their own accounts and join your Courses, Channels and Events. Consent and supervision are set up by you, using the settings below.
Collect parental consent before inviting
There's no built-in consent form. Collect consent from each parent on your side, for example with a short form, before you send their child an invitation.
Heartbeat follows the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), as set out in our Privacy Policy. COPPA requires a parent's consent before collecting personal information from children under 13. Rules in other countries differ, and checking them for the countries your members live in is up to you as the program owner.
Parents join with their own accounts
There are no linked parent and child accounts. Every member signs in with their own email, so a parent can't manage their child's account. Parents who want to follow along can join with their own accounts, and Access Groups decide which Channels and Courses they see.
Supervision settings
- Turn off member DMs so conversations happen in Channels you can see: Settings > Community > General > Direct messaging. This hides Messages for everyone, admins included. On Grow and Scale, DM rules can let members message your admins and moderators only.
- Require a Code of Conduct in onboarding, so every member agrees to your rules before joining.
- Mute members and remove posts and comments when needed.
- Hide member emails and the member directory so members can't see each other's contact details.
