How can we help?

Can members pause their subscription in my Heartbeat community?

  • Updated

We don’t currently support a built-in way for members to pause their subscriptions.

That said, offering a temporary discount is usually a more effective approach. In most cases, members who pause end up canceling shortly after — so a short-term discount tends to provide better retention and keeps your business more sustainable.

What we recommend instead

If a member reaches out asking to pause:

Offer a short-term discount (e.g. 25–50% off for 1–2 months)
Apply it through the cancellation flow, so it shows up right before they cancel
Use promo codes, which can be created directly in Heartbeat

This keeps members in your community, gives them flexibility, and maintains recurring revenue.

How to set this up

  1. Create a promo code in Heartbeat
See how to do this in our guide: How can I make a promo code for my community?

    • You can set the coupon for 100% off (for 1 or 2 months), or partial discounts like 25%–50%

  2. Add the discount to your cancellation flow

    • Go to Settings → Offers

    • Select the offer you want to modify

    • Scroll to the Cancel flow section at the bottom

    • Click “Add a step” → Suggest a discount

    • Choose the coupon you created

Best practices

  • Use 100% discounts sparingly — most members are satisfied with partial discounts

  • Match discounts to the member’s needs — e.g. 50% off for 2 months works well if someone’s going through a tight financial window

  • Keep the flow consistent — make sure your cancel flow messaging aligns with the tone and price points already shared in your community
