Free Trial Setup
You can offer a free trial for your paid product (from the payment setup page) by clicking on the plus sign to the right of the payment frequency and then clicking on free trial.
After you select 'Free Trial', you can choose the amount of days you'd like to give for free before requiring a payment for the product.
Free Trial Settings
Under free trial settings, you may choose one of two options:
Require Payment Method: Members will be required to input their payment information before starting the free trial.
Skip Payment Method: Members will not be prompted to enter their payment information when starting the free trial. After the trial expires, they will be prompted to either enter their payment information or cancel their subscription.

Heartbeat currently does not restrict access to a member who is on a free trial for a product unless you create a separate product for the free trial with different access settings compared to the main product. It would not be recommended to build this workaround as it might complicate your sales funnel.
