How to use command bar in your community

Use the command function to quickly make changes and create content in your community, without the need to search your settings.

Updated this week

Command bar is a widget that pops up in the center of your screen that allows you to create new things in Heartbeat, navigate around the platform and actually access all of our help guides and documents. It allows administrators to quickly perform actions, navigate settings, and access help resources without manually searching through menus.

Where to find the command bar

To open the Command Bar, use the keyboard shortcut Command + K on macOS or Ctrl + K on Windows. Alternatively, click the "Command" button located in the bottom right sidebar of your community interface.

How to use the Command Bar

Once activated, the Command Bar offers several functionalities:

  1. Perform Actions: Quickly create new channels, threads, direct messages, courses, documents, and events. You can also manage user roles, deactivate users, download user data, and add community experiences directly from the Command Bar.

  2. Navigate Settings: Type the name of the setting you wish to adjust, and the Command Bar will take you directly to the relevant page within your admin settings.

  3. Access Help Resources: Enter your query into the Command Bar to search Heartbeat's Help Center for articles and guides related to your topic.

Take action in your community

Some examples of actions you can take using the command bar are:

  • Create channels, threads, DMs, courses, docs, and events

  • Download user data

  • Change a user role

  • Deactivate a user

  • Add a community experience

Navigate around your admin settings

You can navigate to any settings page within your community using the command bar prompt. Simply type the setting you'd like to change or edit.

Access the Help Center

When you type a query in the command bar, it will also search our entire help center for articles that might help you get what you need done.

The Command Bar is currently an admin-only feature.
